Flyball is an internationally recognized team sport for dogs that that was invented in the 1970's in California. (Click here for more info on the history of flyball racing). Flyball races match two teams of four dogs each, racing side-by-side, over a 51 foot long course. Four dogs race on a team, side-by-side against another team. Each dog must leave his handler to complete a series of four hurdles in succession before triggering a spring-loaded box that launches a tennis ball. The dog must then catch the tennis ball and return over all four hurdles to cross the electronically timed start / finish line immediately before the next dog in the line-up passes them. Races are divided into heats. The first team to have all four dogs complete the course, error-free wins the heat.
Dogs earn points towards Flyball titles. The total time for each heat determines how many points are earned. The team that runs under 32 seconds earns each dog 1 point, under 32 seconds earns 5 points and for the fastest dogs, under 24 seconds earn 25 points. Flyball is different from most other dog sports in that here a group of handlers and dogs have to work together as a team to train their dogs, have fun and succeed in competitions.
With technological evolution came a similar evolution in the speed and precision of the sport. Today’s top Flyball teams hold records for completing the course in under 16 seconds. The current world record is 15.22 seconds set by the team "Spring-Loaded" in July 2005. Competitions are sanctioned by the North American Flyball Association (NAFA™) and the United Flyball League International (U-FLI™) Nor Cal Dog Training Club Members have been competing in Flyball since the late 1990's. Currently, Redding has 2 Flyball Teams: The Gold Coast Flyers & Strike Force. The 2 Redding Teams: Gold Coast Flyers & Strike Force compete regionally throughout the year, regularly placing in our division, often bringing home many prizes as well as having our individual dogs earn various Flyball titles. The most important thing we gain from competition and training is a delightful bond with our dogs and teammates. Flyball provides a job and exciting exercise for dogs who crave stimulation and an outlet for their energy. Nor Cal Dog Training Club offers a beginning introduction to Flyball Training twice a year. The local Redding teams practice year-round, each and every week refining our dogs’ skills. Come check us out if you want to see what it’s all about, or if you’d like to get some information on how to join a class and eventually become a part of a competitive team.
